There is a spider called a Northern Green Jumping Spider, or Clown Spider (mopsus mormon), with a light green body and red spotted legs. You would most likely find one during the day in Australia. They have excellent vision and it wouldn't be likely for one not to see you sneaking up on it. These Spiders actually vary in color. Some have red spots, but some do not. I couldn't find any other spider that matched your description.
The closest spider that comes within that description is the Black Widow. The black widow commonly has an hourglass shaped red spot on its abdomen but can range in shape. A heart shape is possible for the black widow. Be warned, black widows are highly venomous and if bitten, you should immediately seek medical help.
The bold jumper is a black spider with white dots on its abdomen that can resemble the shape of a heart. These are common in North America.

My guess is that this spider you saw was either a Jumping Spider (quite possibly a Daring Jumping Spider) or a Parson Spider.
I got bit by a spider fitting this description, and hurt very bad. Very small, black spider with two very small dots on its back(side by side), but I don't know what kind it is..left a pretty good welt, and red dot on my leg.
