So they can still survive whilst it is very cold over here and there is no food
Flying is not an instinctive behavior for birds; rather, it is a learned behavior. Birds learn to fly by practicing and developing the necessary skills as they grow and mature. While birds have evolved over time to have adaptations that make flight possible, it is not something they automatically know how to do.
The ability of an animal to find its way back to a home area is called "homing instinct." This instinct is seen in various animals, especially birds and some mammals, and helps them navigate back to their original location using cues such as landmarks, sun position, and magnetic fields.

migration, such as in birds or animals is because of their instincts, it is more of a memorised behaviour so to speak as all birds are born with this instinct and will fly south for the winter regardless of anything. in the case of nomadic travellers, migration is a learned behavior as they will follow their animals to different water holes among other examples. hope this helps!
When birds fly South for the winter it is called migration.

Differential migration is simply a phenomenon especially found in birds where different sexes of birds migrate different distances.
