If you don't hear anything there is a site that you can send a picture of it and they will try and help. http://www.whatsthatbug.com/Spiders.html There are probably several different spiders world-wide that fit the description in the question. Therefore this is only one of possibly several answers.

Here in southeast Texas, we have a spider which I think matches your description, which is commonly known as a "Golden Garden Spider." The Golden Garden Spider is considered a beneficial["good"] spider in that it is not poisonous, does not bite or sting, and captures a tremendous amount of insects which are NOT considered beneficial.

The Golden Garden Spider usually "sets up" their web in the early evening, leaving it up and in operation during the night hours. It then generally "disappears" during the day, to reappear with a newly created web the next evening. Sometimes, they will keep/maintain the web for as much as a few weeks. Another unusual feature of the web is that it is generally created in a vertical plane, across "pathways" through the vegetation. This can be very disconcerting for anyone walking down that trail in the dark, and into the large, tough web in the face!!! In spite of this, many gardeners, and a few spider fanatics have assured me that the Golden Garden Spider is totally HARMLESS, and that we should protect and preserve them as much as possible.
