What ways is man distinct from animals?

Yes, according to me, and a lot of others, and no according to yet others. This is a difficult point to deal with, because some believe that humans are not animals in spite of having to eat and excrete, breath air, sleep, and a whole slew of other behaviors that we share with animals. Some people claim that humans are different because they have souls, but this is not a proven fact, so it has no bearing.

According to some evolutionary theorists man is nothing special, and so, even though to be classed as an animal, man is not to be considered higher than any other.

According to The Bible, man is the pinnacle and completion of God's creation. Man was created on the same day as the animals, but is not himself an animal, since man alone is made in the image of God. Man alone is held accountable to God and man alone knows true guilt and has a soul and self-awareness which animals do not have. Animals also do not discuss who, if anyone, is the highest, although they certainly do fight for dominance.

First of all, humans are animals. More specifically, mammals. But we are distinct from regular animals in many ways. We are much more developed, hence the height, voice, and opposable thumbs. Some animals have what we have but not as much, such as parrots can talk but they are only mocking, giraffes are tall, and good luck to apes. Try comparing a picture of a average human's brain verses the average calico cat, or cocker spaniel dog. If you have a correct picture and know what to look for, you can tell that our brains are not only larger, but have more of everything, such as memory (elephants have that too).
