Why does a hermit crab live in a snail shell?

A: Like turtles, snails are attached to their shells. They cannot leave their shells and live. If the body is out of the shell totally, the snail is dead. A few people have sworn their snail was alive, out of the shell, driving around. It must have been the current in the tank making their body appear to move. Snails cannot live out of their shells.

What helps chicks get out of shells?

At the tip of a chicks beak is a small sharp bump called the egg tooth. The chick uses this "tooth" to put pressure in the shell from the inside making a small hole for air and then a series of cracks. This process can take 24 hours or more. The chick comes out of the shell with this egg tooth intact but it soon is absorbed as the beak grows and the chick get older.

Does a fresh egg have a tougher shell than an older egg?

Yes, a fresh egg typically has a tougher shell than an older egg. As an egg ages, the protective coating on the shell wears off, making it more vulnerable to breakage. This is why fresh eggs are often more difficult to crack.

How long can a chick live in its shell after breaking through the air sac I have lost one chick in the shell already?

It can take up to 24 hours for the chick to complete its escape. It is best not to help the chick break out of the shell as you can damage the chick trying to help. There is a supply of blood in the shell membrane that will weaken the chick if broken early. Increase the humidity in the incubator, lack of moisture is the main reason for die off in the shell during peeping. try for 75% humidity.

Does a snail die if it's shell gets cut off?

Well see i just found a snail today somewhat shut in my window. i wasn't sure if he/she would make it but i still put it in a secure area, ( like a plastic container of some sort and somewhat big) and put rocks to eat for it's shell nd leaves for food too. so it really depends. if it's hole shail came off, either kill it fr fast non painful death or keep it very very protected until it can grow it back.
