The mother rabbit will not make a nest until about 2 days before she gives birth. So, if there is some time to go you have nothing to worry about.
If she has had the babies and they are not in a nest you are going to need to help her out. Groom her to get plenty of hair from her, bundle it up with some hay and lay the babies in it. She should hopefully get the idea.
It is difficult to determine if the rabbit is pregnant based on nest-building behavior alone. The rabbit may have removed the nest from the box to let it dry if it got wet from the rain. Keep an eye on the rabbit for other signs of pregnancy, such as nesting material being pulled from her fur or an increase in appetite.
You will not want to disturb her or the babies after they are born. I am not sure how she will react to the change you make to the nest. Do it very quietly and peacefully and hopefully the hut will have the same sounds and temperature as where she is now. Also, note that there are specifics that the rabbit nest must have since the babies can have problems with the ammonia from their urine. When our rabbit had babies I was surprised at how tender they are to having just the right situation--make sure the male is not located close by.
The mother rabbit will likely return periodically to nurse and care for her babies. It's important not to disturb the nest as this may lead the mother to abandon her babies. The babies can survive without their mother for short periods as long as they are kept warm and dry.
If your rabbit made a nest 2 weeks ago and hasn't had babies yet, she isn't going to. Grunting is probably a sign that she is ready to breed and don't be surprised if she is pretty aggressive. You should breed your doe, count out 30 days on your calendar - that is the day she is due- count 27 days within the 30- that is the day you put a nest box in with her so she has time to build a nest before the babies get there. She should not have a nest box all the time. Be sure you put the nest box in a corner of her cage that IS NOT her potty corner. If you do she will use it for a potty (like a cat litter box).
It is best to avoid frequent handling and cleaning of a baby rabbit's nest unless absolutely necessary. If the nest appears soiled or damaged, wait until the mother rabbit leaves to feed and quickly replace the bedding with dry hay or straw to prevent baby rabbits from getting cold or exposed. Do not remove baby rabbits from the nest unless there is a clear indication that they are abandoned or in distress.
It is pregnant, give the rabbit extra bedding where she has made her nest, be expecting up to 10 babies.
It may have been a false pregnancy. I would try to breed her again.
When You Find The Rabbits Humping Each Other!
yes it is very normal for a rabbit to take off the top of the nest when her babies are clear to see.
Yes you can move it but make sure that the mother isn't looking and that you wear gloves so that you don't put your scent on the nest or the babies
The first sign of a rabbit having her babies is when she starts to pull out her fur and make a small nest....then the rabbit will stay in the nest for a while...if u want u can look but do not touch the babies...if u touch them they will get ur sent and she will kill them
WELL if you disturbed the nest leave it alone for a long time, make sure you do not touch the nest because she can be so stressed and scared that she will hold the babies in and then she and her kits(baby rabbits) will die!
it is not actually eating it's fur it is just making a nest for it's babies or sometimes it makes the nest for itself to keep it warm trust me i have a rabbit
Remove and discard immediately.
Very seldom does a rabbit make a nest and then not have babies after 5 days. Your rabbit may have had a false pregnancy.
A male rabbit would not make the actual nest for the female but he would be very happy for his fur to be pulled out for the babies to have a comfortable nest. Any rabbit in the pen wouldn't mind the mother rabbit pulling there fur out for a nest because rabbits LOVE to be respected.
Mother rabbits are very gentle and careful when they jump in and out of the nest box they have to get in to nurse the babies, however, if someone or something frightens them they could jump on and squash their babies. A snake in the area will cause a rabbit to jump in and out erratically and they could kill all the babies unknowingly.
