Sexual intercourse between a dog (male) and a bitch (female) transfers the male's sperm to the female's vagina. The sperm travel through the uterus and fertilize the female's eggs. The eggs implant in the wall of the uterus and an umbilicus forms which allows oxygen and nutrients to transfer from mother to puppy and waste products to travel from puppy to mother during the puppies' development. Once the puppies are fully developed contractions of the mother's uterus expel the puppies.

Puppies are born the same way most mammals are - through vaginal delivery from the mother's uterus during parturition. A female dog will go into labor and start having strong abdominal contractions; these contractions help move the puppies to the end of the uterus and position them for delivery. The amniotic sac around one puppy breaks (this is the "water breaking" portion) and shortly thereafter the mother will push the puppy out of her. Ideally the puppy will be born head first with both front paws flat under or around its chin, but puppies can be delivered breech (tail end first) in some cases without further complications.
