According to Darwin

The chicken's direct ancestor is the wild red jungle fowl found in Thailand, Burma, Sumatra, and eastern India. Domesticated by man about 5,000 years ago, it was probably the first domesticated bird and became the chickens we know today.

According to Uppsala University and Durham University in England who have both done gene mapping , the wild grey jungle fowl is also involved but both originate in the same area.
