Progesterone is the major hormone needed to maintain a pregnancy. In the forst 90 days the corpus luteum on the ovary produces the major amount of progesterone. After 90 days the placenta is the major producer. Initiating foaling is by the production of oxytocin.

Do all pregnant mares wax?

No...not all mares wax before foaling.

How soon after foaling is a mare likely to come into season?

Mares come into a foal heat within a week or 10 days after foaling. In the wild, it's not uncommon for a stallion to breed with a mare in foal heat, however a mare may be reluctant because of the foal's presence. She might not show any signs of heat either.

What does a mares do right before the birth of a foal?

Mares will tend to get antsy right before foaling (ie: a few days before) and they will drip milk from their udders. I've written an article about our mares during foaling @ http://www.ehow.com/how_4526561_prepare-mare-foaling.html

What do you need when the horse is having its foaling?

Well you neend to wrap the mares tail and you will neend salt in case the mare dosent wanna lick the foal just put it all over the foal and she wont be able to stop licking! =D

How long can a mare lactate before foaling?

A mare may lactate days or even weeks before foaling, but this can be a serious foaling complication. A mare's first "milk" isn't milk at all. It's called colostrum and it contains the foal's immunity to disease. Some mares may leak a little colostrum before foaling. Usually the foal is born within about 48 hrs. If the mare begins to leak large amounts before foaling, you may need to be prepared for a complication after the foal is born. If all the colostrum has leaked out, there will be none, or not enough for the foal and the foal may become sick and die. A veterinarian can do a quick stallside test to see if the foal has eaten enough colostrum to give it the immunity it needs to survive. If the foal fails the test, IGg may be given to the foal orally (within the first 24 hrs) or thru an IV to save it.

How do you use mares in a sentence?

I'm not sure which of those two mares I want to actually purchase. Both mares are foaling!

How close is a mare when her hips get pointed?

Mares can experience dramatic muscle relaxation over a month before foaling (generally older mares that have had a number of babies). Younger mares may not show much relaxation prior to foaling.

I have a 16yr old Mare who has never had a foal before can I put her to a stallion?

Yes, but make sure the stallion has good foaling ease (or has the genetics that gives small foals), as her pelvis is not as wide as mares that have had experience foaling, but small like mares that are pregnant with their first foal.

After giving birth when does a mare's milk drop?

Some mares are already in milk before the foal is born. It is generally only maiden mares or early foaling mares that take more time for their milk to come in.

Hormones to help with pregnant mares?

The primary hormone used to maintain pregnancy in older mares is progesterone or the synthetic version of it, regumate/altrenogest. This product is used to great effect in preventing EOD (early embryonic death)and a subsequent return to heat due to prostiglandin release due to illness, injury, inflammation etc. especially when pregnancy is being maintained by the primary CL alone. Can be used with anti-inflammitory drugs during transport or when injections that may cause inflammation are required for mares that have to be moved during the early stages of pregnancy. Can be used in late stage pregnancy in conjunction with antibiotic therapy for mares with certain types of low grade infections to insure the foal reaches full term although foal may be dismature, premature septic at birth. Some farms have mares on progesterone therapy as a safeguard. Oxytocin, Prostiglandins can be used to help with the foaling process, milk let down etc.

Does a horse become less aggressive with pregnancy?

Each mare is different but most mares do not make significant behavioral changes because they are pregnant. Mares that are nervous or aggressive before pregnancy will very likely be the same way when pregnant and some behaviors may become intensified once the mare foals and her protective behavior kicks in. Like the old "wives tale" that a dog should have a litter of puppies before she is spayed to make her a better pet...mares with behavioral problems will not improve merely through pregnancy and foaling.

How does a mare give birth while other horses are in the same paddock?

Ideally, foaling takes place in a specially built large stall called a foaling stall. When foaling outside in a herd, mares often separate themselves to foal. A few seek out the company of a special horse friend (usually another mare) or the herd while foaling.

What if a horse is in heat all the time since she gave birth?

Since there is no mention of how long the mare has been in continuous heat this is a very difficult question to answer effectively. Generally, mares will enter into heat as early as 3 days post foaling. The length of this heat cycle is variable with many mares ovulating 6 to 10 days post foaling. The number of days post ovulation where the mare acts receptive could make her appear to be in heat for 12 or 14 days post foaling. That being said, mares that do not clean and involute well post foaling will often return to heat early, which may also give the impression that the mare has been in continuous heat.

How quickly do horses have offspring?

If you mean how long are mares in gestation, then 11 months. If you mean how long until a mare can breed again after foaling, I don't really know. The mare goes back into heat usually around two or three weeks after foaling.

How soon after a colt is born can the mare get pregnant?

A mare can potentially get in foal ten days post foaling, however, many mares will ovulate before 10 days post foaling during their foal heat. It is generally believed that mares the ovulate before the uterus has fully returned to it's normal pre pregnancy condition (about 10 days to clean and fully involute) cannot maintain a pregnancy. If no breeding is done during the foal heat the breeder is aware of her ovulation date, she can be short cycled using prostiglandin 5 days post ovulation and she will be receptive in another 5 days. This would place estrus at anywhere from 16 to 20 days post foaling. If the mare is not short cycled she should return to estrus naturally 14 days post foal heat ovulation at 20 to 24 days (approximate).
