Eugene 'Bull' Connor was the police chief of Birmingham, Alabama during the early 1960s. When Martin Luther King organised huge demonstrations in the city, Connor responded by ordered police officers to attack them with high pressure fire hoses and police dogs. The move backfired, as the brutality attracted international attention and led to the Federal Government passing laws to end segregation.
George Wallace was originally a white moderate, but he was elected Governor of Alabama in 1962 after promising "Segregation Now, Segregation Tomorrow, Segregation Forever" He gained media attention the following year after he personally barred two Black students from entering the University of Alabama. In 1968 he campaigned for President and won strong support in the South, though nowhere near enough votes to win. After being partly paralysed after an assassination attempt in 1972 (the assassin was not politically motivated), he later repented his racist views and became Governor again in 1983-1987, with support from Black communities.
Orval Faubus was the Governor of Arkansas around the time of the Little Rock Nine incident in 1957. Faubus had previously lost popularity by showing some support for the integration of education. With the election day looming, Faubus decided to prevent the enrolment of the nine black students into Little Rock Central High School by ordering the National Guard to bar them from entering. When President Eisenhower found out what was happening, he was furious and sent in paratroopers to intervene.
Hot shoeing is a method of fitting horseshoes to a horse where the horseshoe is heated in a forge before being shaped and applied to the horse's hoof. This allows the farrier to custom fit the shoe to the horse's foot while the metal is still malleable, creating a more precise fit and support for the horse's hoof.
