They move their ears so they can hear what's behind them. Small animals that are often hunted by others usually have this ability, to help them hear predators so the can escape. It is directional hearing that helps them located the source of noises and where they came from.

It is for two reasons, both hunting and being hunted. Many animals that have it are living in grassland biomes where the land is very open with very little obstructions. The ears swivel so that so the hearing can reach a full 360 degrees; therefore, giving it the best chance of catching prey to survive or avoiding being the prey.

Why cats ears go back?

when ever they have their attention fixed on something they can't turn their head so they can hear it better so their ears move toward the sound.thats why if your cats looking away from you and you are to the side of it, if you snap your fingers the cats head wont move but the inner part of their ears will turn towards you.

What do elephants use there big ears for?

There is no actual reason for the size of their ears. It is just one of their adaptations. that was not the answer i was looking for The reason why the rabbits ears are so large is because they have had to adapt to their environment in the wild, as they are a prey animal, and have many predators, they have had to adapt to be able to 'tell' when an predator is in the vicinity. The rabbits ears are large, which enables them to catch the sound waves more effectively, and hear the sounds in the environment more clearly. they are able to hear predators and humans approach from a distance, and are also able to use their keen sense of smell to tell where and how near a animal or predator is, they are also able to tell the difference between male and female humans from their scent. Rabbits also use their ears as a temperature control mechanism, to warm themselves up or cool themselves down, they are able to do this because their ears are filled with blood vessels which run close to the surface of the ear. When the animal is too hot the blood vessels are able to cool the blood down from the cool air around the ear, the blood vessels are also able to warm the blood by the ears being in the sun, warming the ears and in turn the animal..... hope this helps :)

Why does rabbit ears on top and monkeys on side of head?

Rabbits' ears are on top of their heads because they can quickly turn in any direction. Rabbits are prey animals, and this helps them hear predators better. Monkeys are not generally preyed upon, and they use their brains more to avoid danger than their ears. Since they do not rely as much on hearing, their ears are located at the sides of their heads.
