Why are there so many stray animals?

Because there are some heartless and cruel people out there that move away and laeve their animals there trapped.Then sometimes pets run away because their owners are so mean to them. Other times their owners just dump them and abandon them somewhere. But somtimes its no the owners fault, like they could be stray because their owner(s) died and nobody found it out 'till later, and the dog could have been starving and left looking for food. And somtimes the dog just runs away for no reason.

There are several possible reasons. Some dog owners do not keep a close eye on their pets, and let them get out of the yard, where they can get lost; poor training and supervision of the dog can also make it easy for the animal to get away and end up roaming the streets. Other owners cannot afford to keep the dog and so, they just leave the animal somewhere to fend for itself. There is great overpopulation in the dog and cat world, and when pet owners don't spay or neuter their pets, this adds to the problem: if a dog who has not been spayed or neutered gets away and becomes a stray, chances are that dog will ultimately mate with another dog, and the result will be even more stray dogs.

Cats are stray because they either do not have an owner and no animal shelter has taken them in. Or they have escaped their house and have not been found yet.
