Probably because this year (2009) we have had patterns of weather which suited wasps better. We also probably notice them more this year because in 2007 and 2008 we had two consecutive cold and wet summers which were not conducive to insects such as bees and wasps building up big colonies.

It isn't, we just notice them more at this time of year. To understand why this is so we need to know a little of the wasp's life-cycle.

Only queen wasps survive the winter. They come out of hibernation in the spring and feed on nectar from flowers (this is the only time a wasp is a true pollinator). The queen finds a site for a new nest and starts to build it. She lays eggs and when these hatch into larva she captures other insects, grubs or caterpillars which she stings to paralyse them and brings them back for the larvae to eat. It is this that makes wasps a gardener's friend because they help keep a lot of insect pests under control. As wasp larvae eat and grow they produce a sweet liquid, not unlike honeydew, and the adult wasps feed on this.

At the end of summer the queen lays some queen eggs and drone eggs, and after these develop into adults they go off to mate and the old queen stops laying. No more eggs means no more larvae, which means no more honeydew for the adults to feed on and they have to find alternative sources of sugary food. This is when they become more apparent as they start eating fruit and becoming pests to people.

The newly-mated queens look for a place to hibernate and the rest of the wasps die when the colder weather comes.

Why must there be aphids in a greenhouse before you introduce parasitic wasps?

Parasitic wasps lay their eggs among the eggs of aphids. There must be aphids already present so that the wasps can lay their eggs and the wasp larvae will infect the aphid larvae.

What good does the wasp do?

Wasps are actually beneficial insects for humans and the environment. They are one of the major natural scavengers, and they eat insects such as flies and caterpillars that are often considered pests to humans. They should be left alone if they are in a location where they are not bothering people. Some wasps pollinate plants and crops, but most do not.

Do wasps eat butterflies?

I can't answer that question exactly but what I can say is ants eat wasps they will eat anything for the nest. I only know this to be true as on holiday a wasp was annoying me constantly so I hit it when I came back from the beach I found the dead wasp on the floor with ants inside of its abdomen eating it and taking parts of it to the nest.

Why are parasitic wasps important?

Wasps are really a gardener's friend because they kill a lot of garden pests to feed to their larvae. The wasp then feeds on a sugary substance produced by the larvae. Towards the end of the summer the wasps stop laying eggs and raising larvae, so they lose their source of food. They have to find an alternative and this is when they start feeding on the sugars in over-ripe fruit. This is the time when wasp and man come into closest contact and people see wasps as a nuisance.

Why do wasps venture indoors so often and bees never do?

Maybe it is because bees gather nectar from flowers for food. Many wasps are predatory, using other insects (often paralyzed) as food for their larvae so possibly they are hunting for insects and spiders in the house.
