Native fijians called i-taukei named the island group Viti. Viti had many trades with neighbouring Tonga before the arrival of missionaries. When missionaries arrived in Tonga, they saw some fijians and was curious as to who they were. The tongans tried to explain to the missionaries that they are from Fisi. Tongans called fijians Fisi. The missionaries had a hard time pronouncing Fisi and instead say Fiji. That was how fiji was born. Literally through miscommunication between the Tongans and the late missionaries of the pacific.
