I have asked biologists why dogs and cats generally fart silently, and their theories include: (1) the amount of gas produced is small, but potent, (2) the horizontal orientation of their gastrointestinal system puts less pressure on the anal opening, so the gas is expelled more slowly.

∙ 12y agoThe reason it smells so bad is because of what you are feeding them. Commercial cat food is horrible stuff! Even the top brands. I make my cats cat food. I first of all put beef liver in a food processor with a few carrots and liquify it all. Then I put it in a fry pan along with ground chicken, I add a few beaten eggs and a little bit of ground flax, and a VERY small amount of cooked rice. There is also herbal diet supplements you can get at the health food stores. I then cook it all up together. I then put it in small containers and freeze it. I then heat up a small amount for them along with some chopped fresh pea sprouts. They love it and they smell no worse then any person. I also feed my dog and he has no bad smell either. But before I started making their food yeah they STANK!

The noise is caused by the anus muscles. When they are tightly contracted, wind forcing through the anus will make the historical flatulent sound. And same vice versa. When the muscles are loose, wind forces easily through the anus making no sound at all.
