Naturally, this dark pigmentation is a sunscreen that protects the skin from getting burned and is therefore most commonly found in hot climates. Many humans and animals that have lived in hot climates for thousands of years have naturally dark skin. Today, as modern dog breeding continues, there are many animals that are crossbred and the dark pigmentation is passed on, even though they may not live in a warm areas.
