Animals usually hibernate because it gets too hard to find food.

Hibernation/sleeping means they'll be using less energy, so they can use that to survive until there's food available again.

Most animals hibernate at certain times of the year because the supply of food is lower, so they store up and rest through that time. Hibernating slows down their bodily functions such as digestion and heartbeat, as well as their metabolism, or how they turn food and fats into energy, so that they can go a whole season without eating. In order to prepare for this, the animal usually will gorge itself to build up a store of fats and eat fibrous things such as grass, tree bark, hair, etc., to for a plug in their bowels and prevent them from messing themselves during hibernation. Some animals that hibernate include bears, bats, and snakes.

Animals that hibernate during the winter do so because they have developed the ability to shut down their activity as far as possible to allow them to survive during the period when there is a lack of food to be had. Take some bears for instance. during the spring and summer there is plenty of food to be had and this is also the time for taking care of new born, during this time reserves of fat and nutrients are built up in the body. when the climate changes and vegetation and animals become scarce the animal able to hibernate simply goes to sleep using up the food stored in their body until the climate changes once again to a point where it can supply them with the nourishment required. If these animals had to forrage for food in these harsh climates they would not be able to find enough food to keep them from starving to death.

To lessen their metabolism enough to survive through a winter where there isn't enough food. If they didn't do this, their body would spend all the energy it has before winter is over and food became plentiful again.

In the winter, there is very little food available. Because of this, there is little energy available for animals to survive. So animals either migrate to where it's warmer or they hibernate. During hibernation, they slow down their metabolism, use up less energy, and keep warm until spring arrives.

Animals sleep through the winter because it is too cold for the animals to survive the winter. The animals spend the whole of late summer- early fall preparing for the cold season to come.
