A lot of people will state that a spaniels ears are long in order to '' funnel '' in scent when hunting, maybe true but this will not work when they are air scenting with thier heads up.
I reckon that the ears are floppy to protect them when running in and out of cover, thorns, bushes etc.
If the ears were erect, i am sure that the delicate inner ear canal could get damaged by twiggs sticking inside etc.
So if a spaniels ears are floppy and longish, the very ear itself will cover the inner ear and protect it.
Just a theory .....
You can't make a dog's ears floppy if they are supposed to be pointed because their ears, like ours, do contain bones that make the shape of them. True, a dog's ears can't change from points to floppy, but you can change the next generation of dog's ears by breeding the pointed-ear dog with a floppy-ear dog.
a hamster
Rabbits have floppy ears because, a rabbit breeder a long time ago selected a rabbit with "deformed ears" ( lopped ears) and bred it with a staight eared rabbit. And they created lop eared rabbits.
Animals that have pointed ears usually can hear better. Animals that have floppy ears can't hear as well.
As a rule, goats' ears are not cropped. Sometimes goats with floppy ears have their ears caught in a fence or pull the tags out, and that tears them. There is one breed of goats that has ears (the external, floppy part) that are very short or nonexistent, and that is the LaMancha. You can find information about LaMancha goats here:http://www.lamanchas.com/LaManchas have ears that are naturally that way-- they are not cropped or clipped in any way.
None of them really, they all have floppy ears that hang down.....
Yes. All spaniels are prone to ear infections, all dogs that have floppy ears are prone to ear infections. I must check my cocker each and everyday. He enjoys the interaction and does not even know I am checking his ears.
Long ears help a dog "keep" the smell with him in order not to forget it.
goofy is a dog for the size of his nose. and his long floppy ears.
You start barking and growing long/floppy ears.
