Hiccups occur when the diaphragm, a muscle that helps with breathing, involuntarily contracts. This contraction is followed by a sudden closure of the vocal cords, producing the characteristic "hic" sound. Common triggers include eating too quickly, drinking Carbonated Beverages, sudden temperature changes, or emotional stress. Most hiccups are harmless and resolve on their own.
