A dog instinctively protects his food because way back in the evolution of dogs they fought one another for food. Dogs have never lost the tendency to feel they must protect their food. Most animals have this instinct.

The dog is growling because it does not want you to take the bone away. You should as the alpha be able to remove the bone or food from your dog. They still may growl but should allow you to take the bone; otherwise the dog is the one that is in control in that situation.

The dog is likely displaying a form of dominance. They're basically saying, "Don't you dare take my food." This ties into behavior showed by wolves, coyotes, and other canines. In the wild, it is nessecary. Growling and snarling is the way they keep their food to themselves, which is needed. Though dogs today don't need to fight for their food, the same principals exhist. This behavior can get out of control, though, and it is important to get it resolved; over-protective dogs can go after people too! -I hope you found this helpful!

Growling around food is one of the potential behaviours that can be simply undermined during their developmental stages as a puppy. If you are trying to prevent the behaviour, you need to start young, or as young as possible. During his meal times simply reach down and take the bowl from him. Lavish him with praise and return the bowl every time he permits it. Correct him and keep the bowl for at least ten minutes if he shows the slightest sign of aggression.

A dog that growls for food at the table, shouldn't be allowed to be near the people who are eating.

Growling is a threat and it means your dog sees you as a subordinate meant to be dominated by him or her. Growling should never be tolerated.

Your dog needs to be taught that he/her is NOT the one in charge, this is not a lesson to be taught with hitting or punishment. A dog trainer would probably be the best way for you to get control over your dog.

The dog will probably feel challenged by the growl and might get aggressive. Unless the dog knows you are playing with it.

Why do some does get aggressive when eating meat?

Dogs guard their food (as a wolf would in the wild), this guarding shouldn't be a problem as long as your dog knows that you are the pack leader. He should respect you coming near him while he is eating.
