The most common kind of crooked beak in older chickens is probably the defect that develops between 2 and 10 weeks of age. Chicks that were normal at hatching can show this later. The lower beak is unaffected, but since it is not used for pecking, the end is not worn down as much as in normal birds. At maturity the tip of the upper beak tends to curl downward. In the skulls of affected birds there is an asymmetry of the maxillae, nasals, and pre-maxillae, which is probably responsible for the condition of the beak. Birds with the upper beak straight but much shortened are sometimes found in families showing crooked beaks. If the bird seems to be feeding then your only option is to monitor its health and feeding habits.

This can be caused by several things. Many day old chicks are de-beaked soon after hatch. This is done at the big hatcheries to prevent the chickens from damaging each other. When done as fast as they do it at the major production facilities some birds are damaged. Disease can also deform a beak as well as genetic defects.
