Most domestic cats develop these in adolescence and its completely harmless and normal. It is not necessarily related to a cat being overweight, either.
It is unclear why cats have these folds of skin, but there are several theories:
- It is used to store extra fat and nutrition - similar to when wild animals stock up fat reserves ready for winter and there is little food around.
- Allows extra flexibility when the cat is running, hunting and other activities that require a lot of movement.
- Finally, the extra skin could serve as an extra protective layer around the belly area when fighting.
