When they talk about 'man' it also means women in the quote, 'Man's best friend ... the dog.' Dogs are actually all of that and more. Humans have a tendency to criticize others, be prejudice, racist, back-stabbing, criminal personalities, murder and maim each other, etc. Dogs are very loyal and will protect their owner with everything they have whether they are little to large dogs. They accept their owner without question and it doesn't matter if you are crippled, blind, homely, old, young, etc. All the dog sees (if you treat it right and share that love) is you are it's world!

I'm not an expert, but my parents bought three dogs for our family, owned one at a time, until I was about 20, so I have some experience having pet dogs. Dogs are faithful companions, loyal, affectionate, easy and inexpensive to get and keep. They ask very little in return other than good-tasting food, water, and a comfortable place to sleep. I think most breeds of dogs could be called man's best friend. However, some breeds have been put on a government's list in Ontario, Canada. I don't know all the details, but I think they're banned from being imported and reproducing, because some of these pets have attacked and sometimes killed other dogs, other dog owners, and even the dangerous breed dog owner himself/herself or their friends or relatives. Even with the dangerous dog ban in place, occasional dog attacks still take place and are reported by the news media. Two of the approximate six breeds determined to be dangerous are Pit Bull Terriers and Rotweillers.

But seriously -Because of all the things dogs can be trained to do that other animals can't: guide, track, search and rescue...even just petting a dog has a calming effect and has been shown to lower blood pressure and help ease anxiety.
