The centuries-old legend on the origins of the New Year celebration varies from teller to teller, but they all include a story of a terrible mythical monster who preyed on villagers. The lion-like monster's name was Nian (?) which is also the Chinese word for "year." The stories also all include a wise old man who counsels the villagers to ward off the evil Nian by making loud noises with drums and firecrackers and hanging red paper cutouts and scrolls on their doors because for some reason, the Nian is scared of the color red. The villagers took the old man's advice and the Nian was conquered. On the anniversary of the date, the Chinese recognize the "passing of the Nian" known in Chinese as guo nian , which is also synonymous with celebrating the new year. Chinese New Year always falls on the second new moon after the winter solstice.

The color red
According to tales and legends, the beginning of Chinese New Year started with the fight against a mythical beast called the Nian (Chinese: 年). Nian would come on the first day of New Year to eat livestock, crops, and even villagers, especially children. To protect themselves, the villagers would put food in front of their doors at the beginning of every year. It was believed that after the Nian ate the food they prepared, it wouldn't attack any more people. One time, people saw that the Nian was scared away by a little child wearing red. The villagers then understood that the Nian was afraid of the colour red. Hence, every time when the New Year was about to come, the villagers would hang red lanterns and red spring scrolls on windows and doors. People also used firecrackers to frighten away the Nian. From then on, Nian never came to the village again.
It is for good luck and there is a legend saying that there was a monster called "年" (nian) and he ate people once a year. Then a old man told everybody to make loud noises and have alot of red everywhere because"年"was scared of loud noises and red. So on the day that"年"came, they made loud noises and put up red everywhere and nian was scared and ran away without eating anybody. So people still do the same thing and they make the 红包( red packet) red.
