All dogs are smart in their own way, but the shihtzu is the worlds dumbest dog! It is said and proven that smaller dogs tend to be less intelligent, and the shihtzuhas been proven the dumbest! Even though this breed is cute and fluffy, you have to look deep underneath all of that fur to find not only intelligence, but a good personality.

All canines are pretty similar in intelligence levels.

How smart a dog is depends largely on environment: a properly-fed, well-cared-for, well-trained and loved pet is going to be smarter, as far as humans are concerned, than a neglected or abused animal.

A dog born wild and living all its life in the wild will, provided it learns fast, be brilliant at being a wild dog. It won't have any human skills at all.

A domestic dog is another matter.

When it comes to breeds of dog, different breeds are designed to be good at different things, from a human's point of view.

Just as you wouldn't expect a brain surgeon to automatically be a brilliant mechanic or a top jockey to be a natural bull-rider, so you wouldn't expect a cattle dog to excel at retrieving and you wouldn't buy a chihuahua expecting it to grow into a great big guard dog.

If you expect a dog to run after a ball and bring it straight back and hand it over, when all that dog's inbred instincts tell it to grab the ball, and run off with it somewhere and tear it to pieces, you've got the wrong dog. Or you haven't yet taught your dog to do what you expect it to do.

You can train pretty well any dog to do pretty well anything within reason. Keep it simple: remember, the top dog-trainers who teach their animals to amaze us spent years learning to do that. And don't assume a dog is dumb just because it doesn't instinctively do what the totally different breed of dog next door does.

You might as well expect the top dog-trainer to win the Kentucky Derby or the Grand National or the Melbourne Cup.

They are actually highly intelligent, just not very obedient. They are sly, independent thinkers and if you want them to do something for you, there better be something they like in it for them.
