If it doesnt hatch in about 24 hours, you should assist because they are weak unhealthy chicks.... but be very careful if you assist them, but if you dont after 24 hours they could die..... Let them alone. At this point it is too early for you to help. Many novice breeders often become concerned and do far too much damage trying to help.

Opening a hole is too dangerous for the chick,as you cannot know where the chicks head is and that must be where the first hole is started. Candling and forcing the hatch is done by some breeders but mortality is very high. Just poking a hole, though well intentioned is going to do no good. Under the shell are two membranes, one directly under the shell is rubbery and does not carry a blood supply but the inner membrane does. As the chick works its way around the inside of the shell (pipping) it uses what is called an egg tooth to poke holes in the inner membrane sending a signal to stop the blood supply. This takes time and helping it is bad for the chick. When the chick has pipped (poked holes) all around in a circle it flexes its body to separate the shell. Sometimes the chick gets too weak to make the circle and has not enough energy to continue and that is when an experienced breeder/farmer can sometimes render assistance by loosening the tougher outer membrane but more often than not it kills the chick.

Helping AFTER it has made a small hole gives you an idea where the head is but it is still ill advised. Bump up the humidity to around 75%, if they are in an incubator, this will help loosen the membrane.

You can hear chick churpping inside egg?

Peeping and Pipping The chick will call out inside the egg as it starts to pip or break open the shell. As it makes the small holes in a circle from the inside you can often hear it making that plaintive little "Peep" "Peep" sound.

You can hear your chicks churpping in the egg for 12 hours and they still have not cracked the egg?

I have had chicks, espically larger breeds, peep while still encased in the shell for up to 3 days prior to hatching. Goslings sometimes up to 5 or 6 days. Have they pipped yet (created a tiny "starting" hole)? Once they've pipped, they should be out of the shell within 12 hours no problem :) Good luck!

How does developing chick nourish itself while inside the eggshell?

What you see when you crack open an egg is Yolk and albumen, the white and the yellow. This is actually the food for the developing chick when the egg is fertilized and incubated. The chick uses this food for the 21 days it takes to develop. It gets nutrients from the yolk. If you have ever studied the development of an egg you will see what happens. I have seen chicks born out of an incubator with the yolk still attached to their bodies....

How do mother animals know their own babies?

The chick bonds with mom soon after hatching. If you listen to the mother bird you will hear her cluck softly and make comforting sounds to the chicks constantly. When the chick feels threatened it will try very hard to return to the mother. The chick uses auditory and visual cues to recognize momma bird.

How can you tell just by looking that a hen is going to lay eggs?

There are several indicators of when a peeping will begin. One of the first is as the term "peeping" suggests. You will begin to hear tiny peeping sounds from within the egg. The egg(s) will begin to move and roll from side to side as the chick struggles to use its egg tooth. Soon small holes and cracks will appear in the moving eggs.

Why can't i hear?

If you can't hear crickets, you probably are not living in an area that attracts many. Also, if it is a colder season such as winter, crickets are hibernating and they won't be out and about.
