I haven't looked at one, but I am guessing it is a belt. If you look at the front of the engine,you should see the plastic covers over the belt. A chain would need to be lubricated and would be enclosed with a metal cover.Also,check the maintenance schedule booklet. You will see the recommended replacement schedule for the belt. For my 2004 V6,it is 9 years or 90,000 miles [I think]
