A picture or pattern on a computer screen that appears when the computer has not been used for a period of time.

It is an outdated Windows feature that was intended to change what was being displayed on your monitor in order to avoid screen burn in. With the introduction and ultimately the proliferation of non phosphor-based monitors, screen savers were no longer a needed feature of windows. They have remained an expected feature for so many users over the years that it has not been removed from operating systems and in recent versions has been improved somewhat.

Screen savers remain moderately useful when they are enabled with a locking feature where a password is required to turn it off. Without the locking feature they can still be a rather pretty display of graphics or enabled as a slide-show of favorite photographs. There remain many different choices for free screen savers available as a download on the internet.

Screen burn in was a problem with the first monitors in common use because they were typically phosphor-based electronic monitors. Burn in occurred when the monitor had the same graphic or words shown for lengthy periods of time and the monitor would "remember" that display.

What actually happens is the phosphor compounds which emit light to produce images lose their ability to emit light as they are used. So if the same image, or menu, or words were displayed for a long period of time those phosphor compounds used for that display would, when other things were displayed on the monitor, show a ghost image due to the difference in the amount of degradation of the phosphor compounds.
