American Civil War: 1861-1865. In 1860, the South Seceeded from the Union. In 1861 Fort Sumpter was fired upon by Confederate forces in Charlston Harbour, South Carolina, thus starting the war. The US mainly had support from France, and the South from England. England supplied the South with rifles, such as the Enfield pattern 1853, and the Enfield pattern 1858. Also, the Confederate sailing ship, the CSS Alabama. The south might have gained actuall support from England if its main cause had not have been slavery. Also, England was not impressed by the South, as there was never a Confederate victory on Union soil. The closest the South ever got to that, was a battle called Gettysburg in 1863 when Confederate soldiers set up in town to get some shoes. The war ended in 1865, returning the states of Virginia, Florida, South Carolina, North Carolina, Georgia, Alabama, Louisiana, and Texas to the Union. Robert E. Lee's surrender of the Army of Northern Virginia to the Union took place at Appomattox Court House in Virginia on April 9, 1865. A total of 625,000 men were killed in the war.
