Dialect is a variation of language spoken by a particular group, often within a particular region. They differ from standard language because they may contain different pronunciations, forms, and meanings. An example of dialect in Tom Sawyer is in Chapter 1 pg.3 where it states "Nothing! Look at your hands. And look at your mouth. What is that truck?"
An example of syntax in The Adventures of Tom Sawyer is the use of complex sentences to add detail and describe characters' thoughts and actions. For instance, in the passage where Tom convinces his friends to join him in whitewashing the fence, Mark Twain uses complex sentences to convey Tom's clever persuasion techniques.
Writers want to make the reader form a mental image of each character. Often dialect or speech patterns tell the reader where the person is from, his level of education and give some level of input about his character ( You;s expect the mild mannered school marm to say "p;ease do come in for some green tea." not "Hey you #%^**#!! get your #$#%$^! over here and knock back some ^%^$* moonshine!"). In the case of the characters in Tom Sawyer the characters range from slaves with no formal education at all to bankers and local church ministers, Twain would have had to spend half the book explaining who had what background if he could not have fallen back on the "tool" of dialects.
Twain uses a lot of syntax in Tom Sawyer. Syntax is when a sentence is writen grammatically incorrect. Here is an example: "What makes the candle blow so?" or "go long and shut it Sid"
I hope this helped but you really ought to do your own book report. This is hard, it was hard for me my first time but sooner or later coping off the internet will not be good:)
He uses this to explain who the charater is without taking along time. You know right away that the person has no education or is female, etc.
