I used a clinic in Cuidad Juarez this past April of 2008. I flew in from FL and stayed a week in El Paso. The prices were reasonable and the staff was great with no language issues whatsoever. I had three bridges, a root canal, and several crowns installed. The root canal was very painful as the staff was unable to numb me enough although there was no shortage of shots trying. The temporary crowns on my front teeth were crude and ugly and fell out within a day or two. One of the bridges was placed on a tooth that they put a post in. This bridge was loose in a month as the anchor tooth wasn't adequate. The rear anchor was quite solid, however, and was a very unpleasant experience and costly to remove along with the posted tooth. They did refund the money I paid them for that bridge with no hassles, but I'm left with missing teeth and the pain and expense of the bridge removal. Now that I've lived with the remaining two bridges and crowns for awhile, I have these observations. The front crowns look good but are much closer together than before and difficult to floss. I've had two local dentist appointments for adjustment issues on the bridges that I didn't notice when in Juarez. The two remaining bridges seem wider and flatter than my original teeth. They are adequate and I hope they remain so but my overall view is that they do not remotely compare, quality-wise, to a previous bridge that I had for 14 years. Again the people were nice but I spent a bunch of money and didn't get what I'd hoped and paid for. All things considered, I cannot recommend this clinic. Tom Geren ... Source: American Dental Association. Why is dental cheaper in Mexico? - lower operating costs, dentists are not required have malpractice insurance, dentists are less advanced and use less expensive technology and infection control procedures. Dental treatment performed abroad although less expensive, also carries an increased number of associated complications and risks. Travel, Dental Care and Dental Tourism There is a growing phenomena called "Dental Tourism" in which people travel to a destination that offers less expensive dental care. The decision to visit another country for dental care should go beyond simply comparing prices or even evaluating the dentists' expertise. Countries differ in their standards for infection control and safety. The use of fresh gloves, sterile instruments and safe water are not standard practice in all countries. Without these precautions, patients could be infected with diseases such as hepatitis B. Before considering such trips, it is important to be prepared by using information such as that contained in OSAP's Traveler's Guide.
