Most people will say no way, but my basset hound can get extremely vicious.
I had a buy a shock collar to correct these actions. Now his fits of rage only happen every couple of months rather than every couple of days or weeks.
Literally he mauled my arm because a grabbed his collar so he didn't run out the front door. Left my arm all bruised and he did break the skin a little.
I've seen dogs growl and even snap, but you'd swear I had a pitbull if you watched him attack. He is relentless. (thankfully he's not a pitbull or i'd be seriously hurt from his attacks).
The odd thing is, is that 10 seconds after the episode he's wagging his tail and thinks he's my best friend. He just doesn't like not getting his way I guess.
I would NEVER recommend a basset as a pet, they are stubborn and in the case of mine, vicious.
Most dogs like to please their owners, NOT the basset. He doesn't care about pleasing anyone.
Their good trackers but horrible pets.

A blood hound has longer legs than a basset and a stronger sense of smell (the best, actually, of all dogs). According to wikipedia the modern basset hound was bred from a bloodhound and another type of basset.
