Basset Hounds

Basset hounds are scent hounds that were originally bred and used to hunt rabbits. They have short legs, floppy ears and sad, droopy eyes. Basset hounds tend to be a very vocal breed and they will “talk” to their owners until they get what they want. All Basset Hound questions can be directed here.

English setter and basset hound a good mix?

No. Absolutely not.

In what way? We actually have an English Setter Basset Hound mixed breed and she is fantastic and ADORABLE! She's white with black and brown "ticking" like a setter with short legs and a long body- but not quite as stout as a basset. She's very friendly and has a great temperament, just needs a lot of exercise.

You can see photos here: http://picasaweb.google.com/monette.anderson/EnglishSetterBassetHoundMixEnglishBasseterHound?feat=directlink

We also have a English Setter Basset Hound mixed breed and she's wonderful. She's 7months healthy and beautiful. She is strong willed and requires alot of activity (long walks, outdoor play). She is great with people including children.

What were basset hounds bred for?

The Basset Hound comes from France. They were originally owned and bred by members of the French Nobility in the 1500s.

In the 1700s, after the French Revolution, commoners started to hunt with the Basset Hounds for hunting. They were bred to hunt small animals such as badgers, rabbits, and hares.

The Basset Hound belongs to the Scent Hound group of dogs. Their sense of tracking is only second to the Bloodhound. They have large noses with open nostrils and their loose lips that allow them to pick up scent particles and follow the trail of animals. They have long ears which help keep the scent of their prey close to their nose.

Basset Hounds have been selectively bred to produce small legs to allow man to easily follow them on foot, or to produce longer legs for man to keep up with them on horseback.

How long do bassett hounds live?

The answer to the question of how long Canis familiaris, specifically Basset Hounds, will live, is entirely dependent on care of the animal, starting with, not just the immediate family, but preceding generations. Proper medical treatment by qualified individuals, proper diet, and proper habitat (even if this includes habitation within a home and little outdoor exposure), is vital to the longevity of these animals.

Because this is a breed bred almost exclusively for hunting purposes, it would stand to reason that moderate exercise would necessitate a healthy lifestyle, thus increasing their longevity. This should be coupled with moderate amounts of fresh, clean water, especially during exertion such as exercise (water should always be available to a dog). Be certain to ask a veterinarian or other qualified individual about exercising a pet, as this can depend on their health and other factors.

According to current surveys in the United Kingdom, where this breed is common (it is believed to be of French origination through tapestries of hunting and mention in texts throughout the Middle Ages and earlier, even down to its French namesake), Basset Hounds range in longevity from 10-20 years. However, the populations surveyed are rather small, and can also be from hunting stock, which can be of differing lifestyle and lineage than modern pet Basset Hounds.[1]

What is the life span of a concrete pool with proper care?

In general, the typical gunnite built-in pool will last a good 30-40 years before any significant re-work to the pool itself is usually needed. Given proper care and maintanence, there is no reason why a well-contstructed pool can't last 50+ years. This is evidenced by the fact that there are many, many pools still in service that were built during the 1950's. Hope this helps...

Do basset hounds like water?

To drink, yes. To swim in, mine doesn't.

To add to your answer, I took my basset hound to the lake last weekend and he LOVED the water, only wading in it though, he would wade out up to his chest and stand there, then run out and repeat it all over again. It was really fun to watch.

What is the amount of exercise and playfulness for basset hounds?

To keep the Basset Hound healthy, it should be given plenty of exercise, including a long daily walk to keep the dog mentally stable, but discourage it from jumping and stressing the front legs. This breed will run and play by the hour when given the chance. Because of their keen noses they tend to roam when they pick up a scent. Take care when off lead that the dog is in a safe area. When they pick up a trail they may not even hear you calling them back as their complete focus will be on finding the critter at the other end.

Are basset hounds good with children?

Basset hounds made ideal pets for families with children. They are gentle, tolerant and welcoming animals. Basset hounds get along well with other pets and are seldom aggressive to strangers. Basset hounds need daily walks, but children need to be careful when walking them because they are hunting dogs and if they get a whiff of a certain scent they may pull at the leash and a young child may have difficulty controlling them. Since basset hounds are low to the ground, young children may try to ride on their backs - this should be avoided at all costs. Basset hounds would make a good pet for a family with children, but be prepared for lots of drool, shedding and stubbornness!
