Hobos is a name given to homeless, jobless wanderers during the depression. Homeless people were very common at that time and they had a number of survival techniques. They were wanderers because there was so many of them that towns and cities didn't want them gathering in groups or setting up "communities" in their place so when they were discovered, the authorities made sure they moved on to outside their town or city.
Hobos walked the roads, rode freight trains, and hitchhiked when they could. They sometimes would knock on someones door and ask to do chores in return for food; sometimes they were lucky enough to find a place with a soup kitchen; sometime they found a religious group that for the price of sitting through a sermon, could receive something to eat or even a cot for a nights sleep (the background for the musical Guys and Dolls). They were able to set up encampments near railroad tracks where there were a few "permanent" residents to show the ropes to new comers, usually these were people too old to make it on the road. In exchange for some helpful local information, they had the newer, younger folks seek out provisions for them and to share in the camp. But if they could travel, people didn't stay too long, there was always hope in the next place down the line.
It was a very harsh life, photos show most of these wanderers as extremely thin, they rarely ate well. Deaths were common for those riding the freight trains because it was so dangerous. "Yard Patrols" were employed by railroads to look for them and chase them away, sometimes they would be beaten or arrested for vagrancy if the patrols could catch them. Throughout the thirties, government work programs were instituted to build public works and provide jobs for the jobless. The work situation slowly improved over the decade, and after a few years on the road, people would eventually get jobs. By the time the US entered WW2, so many men were drafted and industry began supporting the war effort, that jobs were no longer hard to find.
Today there are still a handful of people who live this lifestyle, not many. What we call the homeless today are similar but are usually homeless and jobless for different reasons than the "hobos".
YES! Of course hobos are real! They are people who live on the streets b\c they can't afford a house.
Yes! Of course you retard! ...r u real...?
The only hoboes who're fat are those depicted in art and cartoons. Real hoboes are likely to have malnutrition and to be thin.
