I was looking at Ford parts . com ( no spaces ) and there seems to be quite a list of
different part numbers for the alternator . As far as I know the 4.0 liter OHV engine
in a 1996 Ford Explorer XLT uses a 95 amp alternator but it shows quite a few different
part numbers
A 1996 Ford Explorer XLT would be just under ( 16 feet in length )

You can find manuals at this site, https://www.fleet.ford.com/maintenance/owners_manuals/default.asp this is where i got mine from for my '96 explorer, its just like the original one that comes in the glove box.
Wherever the fuel filter on a 96 ford explorer is
First, take the battery cables off then remove the battery hold down then remove the battery. Reverse order to install. Be sure to clean the cables.
