A book entitled, "Swift Boat Down" by Steffes, concerns the crew of a PCF that was sunk by NVA helicopters in 1968.
The film, "Bright Shining Lie" starring Bill Paxton might be one. That charactor ultimately did die in South Vietnam. This scene occurs in about 1962.
Most of the written stories about men that perished in Vietnam are about pilots, or aircrewmen. But usually they're short stories within a book about a particular aircraft, not the men themselves. For example, the last sortie by an A-1 Skyraider, the pilot died. The last sortie by an Air Force A7 Corsair II, the pilot may have died. Etc.
In "Bat 21", starring Gene Hackman, that's based on a true story, and over a half dozen men died trying to save that one man; plus another 2 or more aircraft were shot down in the process. And to make matters worse, the largest and greatest "Search and Rescue" in USAF history was taking place at the very same time that Bat 21 was...the rescue of a downed "AC-130 Spectre" gunship crew. But it received NO PRESS at all (until later) because every journalist was concentrating on the Bat 21 SAR.
Such is life.
No one from Freetown, Mass., is listed as having died in Vietnam. No one gave either of the two villages of Freetown as their home town. 22 people from nearby Fall River died in Vietnam, and 12 more from Taunton; sometimes people would enter a larger, more identifiable city if they were from a small town like Freetown.
People who write do it because they enjoy it. People who write children's stories like doing it, and they like entertaining children.

It depends on the family and their beliefs and traditions. I know someone from Vietnam and they do not celebrate birthdays, but they say they know some people that do, just like us.
