No count has ever been made of every building in Hawaii, nor is it likely to be.
The cost of building materials is ONE part of the cost of building anything in Hawaii. Remember, Hawaii is smallish island, with a limited amount of manufacturing- so if it is not MADE in Hawaii, someone had to pay to have it shipped to Hawaii. Before you start ordering lumber, better talk with a local contractor. Hawaii has an insect known as the Formosa Termite, with a HUGE appetite for wood. As a result, there are special construction practices and materials used to keep your house from being eaten out from under you.
