I'm not sure I understand the question, but they were rather interested in the idea of the Messiah's coming and his subsequent overthrow of the Roman Empire. This was intensely desired because of all the hardship they were going through. They needed a savior. (Although the Jewish concept of what this savior would be was much more political than spiritual.)

You're looking for an answer having something to do with the messiah, and you are wrong.

The Jews' most popular idea at that time, andbefore it and after it, was the learning and fulfillment of God's Torah. The Jews, until not very long ago, in their great majority were deeply in love with their Torah.

The messiah is a relatively minor part of Judaism. That belief has always had its proper place in the scope of Judaism; and Torah-Jews are well aware that expanding it out of proportion is a serious mistake.

It was non-traditional breakaway groups such as the Essenes who put undue stress on eschatology, not the Torah-observant normative Jewish community.

There have been a couple of dozen false messiahs among the Jews, from at least about 2200 years ago down to the present day. These characters were in most cases a brief flash in the pan.
