Is your 'battery light' on? If it is, check that your belts are in good condition. More likely the alternator is faulty. You can have it tested (usually for free) by most repair shops and auto parts stores. If this is a new style cougar (the little one from the late 90s) expect to be charged at least 2.5 Hours for installation of a new alternator unless you want to do it yourself, which may require a lift or having two elbows on at least one of your arms.
== == not sure what your asking, if it's on probly altenter going out or belt sliping
I have what looks like a battery light on my dashboard. What does this mean?
disconnect the negative battery cable for 60 seconds then re-connect should do it
I was looking at the 1999 Mercury Cougar Owner Guide and it does not show that it has a gas cap warning light
On a 2000 Mercury Cougar : That's your Anti-theft system status light
disconect the battery cables for a couple of miniutes. that should do it. At Least 10 Minutes for battery disconnect
usually that the battery isn't taking a charge. have the alternator checked, many shops will test the charging system for free
You need an oil change.
You are low on coolant.
This happened to me on a road trip in my 84 Cougar. It was a long time ago, but first make sure your belts are tight! But I believe you may need to replace the alternator. If the battery is old, its cheap insurance to do both.
my light went off when i put a new gas cap on and unhooked the battery 10 min too reset
it is located on the light a switch that says 12sec on and off
go to a auto parts store like advance auto and have them check your computer to see why it is on. they do this for free. this might give you a idea on why its on. if you havent already.
