Certain numbers did come to have significance in Christianity. However this is purely a matter of superstition particularly in Roman Catholicism. Any credence given to the significance of numbers belongs in the realm of divination in the area of numerology. In Roman Catholicism, the numbers three and seven came to have significance, particularly three, because of the the Holy Trinity. Seven is the only number that will give a total of twenty-one when multiplied by three. If that is not confusing enough, that total (twenty-one) if one adds the numbers one and two will bring one back to three, the number of persons in the Holy Trinity.

The theory of twenty-one being significant is further "strengthened" by such lists as the Seven Deadly Sins and the Seven Holy Virtues. Many other references are to be found in the "mythology" of the Roman Catholic Church eg. there are twenty-one chapters in the gospel of Saint John. Jesus is said to have made twenty-one appearances to his apostles and other people to prove His resurrection. One can also consider that Jesus was twelve when He was found discussing the Scriptures with the Rabbis at the temple and died on the cross twenty-one years later at the age of thirty-three. The Virgin Mary is said to have died at the age of seventy and assumed into Heaven twenty-one years after the death of Jesus.

Twenty one I belive means a sign of perfection therefore used such as in twenty one gun salute, 21 bells for the Angelus.
