No, employers are generally required to compensate you for the work that you have done. Even if the employer was to lay you off, they still should issue a final paycheck for the work that you have done previously.
No. Employers are typically required to issue a final paycheck on the next regularly scheduled payday after termination, unless otherwise specified by state law to pay sooner.
Almost every state has a payday law requiring paychecccks to be distributed twice a month. Not paying employees on time is illegal.
In Minnesota if an employee is fired they must be paid within 24 hours.
Minnesota ( Minn. Stat. §§ 181.13, 181.14) Final check must be given immediately.

Laws vary from state to state but an employer is typically required to issue a final paycheck on the next regularly scheduled payday. Some states give you less time than that. You have no reason or right to "hold" an employee's check.
Sue them
The AG will handle that.

Snowmen hold brooms for fun.
No an attorney cannot hold personal property without reason or even with reason. There is no documented reason that any attorney should withhold personal property.
Well I dont live in Alabama. But in my opinion. I feel it is. If a company deductes anything from your paycheck. They have to state on the stub what it is for and how much was taken. If the company says they are deducting said amount for this reason and later it becomes apparent that they are not putting your money twords that reason. They are basicly stealing from you. Your money. Your hard work. If a deduction is not being put to its use then it should stay in your paycheck. Period. Thats just my opinion. :-)
