For many people the cause can be found. A seizure is usually as a result of a disruption of electrical activity in the brain. There are many possible causes for that. By doing tests on an individual it can often be discovered. Sometimes it might be fairly obvious, like if someone has sustained a head injury and then starts getting seizures. In other cases it can be much more difficult to find the specific cause. Each case is different.

Is Epilepsy Fatal?

It absolutely can be fatal. Seizures can cause breathing problems, pressure on the heart etc. Falls during a seizure can cause severe head injuries, seizures while swimming or in the bath can cause drowning. Non stop seizures (status epilepticus) can be life threatening and requires immediate emergency treatment. A friend of my family died during a seizure due to cardiac arrest. I worked with adults with severe epilepsy for 5yrs. I had one resident who had a huge fit in her bedroom. She was found in her bedroom slumped on her bed. We done CPR but nothing we done could save her. She had very bad epilepsy where she would not breath while having the seizure and she would need oxygen when she had finally come out of the seizure.

What are the symptoms of epilepsy in Pomeranians?

Epilepsy is a catch-all "diagnosis" that is defined by the primary problem: recurrent seizures of unknown source. Therefore, what you would see in a Pomerian is multiple seizures (possible muscle spasms, falling over, convulsions, inability to walk or eat/drink normally, unresponsiveness, etc). Your veterinarian will perform a workup including looking for trauma to the brain and skull, looking for signs of infection in or around the brain and looking for other causes of seizures such as electrolyte imbalances. If none of these are found and your Pomerian has more than one of these seizures, your veterinarian is likely to diagnose epilepsy and start treatment. The treatment will be required for the rest of the dog's life and will not prevent all seizures.

If your friend has epilepsy whether his upcoming child will also get epileptic or not?

There are many causes of epilepsy and whether your friend's child has a higher risk of developing it depends on the history of the parent's seizure disorder. Did your friend have epilepsy since birth? Did his parents or siblings have seizures? If that is the case then the child may have a slightly higher chance of developing epilepsy. But if the seizures of the parent started as a result of a head injury, a severe illness like encephalitus or menengitus, or due to some other insult to the brain, the baby will have no higher chance of developing epilepsy than any other child. Even if the parent was born with epilepsy, there is still a high probability that the baby will be fine. An fine and safe source of information can be found at epilepsyfoundation.org Best wishes to your friend and his new baby.
