AnswerZoloft is an anti-depressant that is most commonly instructed to be taken in the morning. One of the most common side effects Zoloft has on people is insomnia. If you are using Nyquil to just help you get to sleep, I would recommend that be stopped, due to the alcohol present in Nyquil. There are a variety of sleeping pills your physician may prescribe you to help you sleep that will not interact in a negative way with the Zoloft.

To add to this statement, DO NOT take Codine, Nyquil and Zoloft, I had a horrible cough and took these together and had a MAJOR panic attack, brain spasms, one minute I could see fine the next blurred vision...DO NOT mix these drugs....Ask your doctor for a different choice for Cold Medicine. I also had no equilibrium, I was walking like a drunk....and totally out of it!!!! Took me hours to feel somewhat normal!!!

The following answer comes from someone who clearly is misinformed. You can take NyQuil while on Zoloft, however you should do so with caution. Their answer is based on the fact that "they think all anti depressants are MAOI's", (this is not the case, in fact most prescribed anti-depressants are SSRI's [selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors], not MAOI's [monoamine oxidase inhibitor]). Also keep in mind that this person was taking an extreme excess of the recommended dosage. Which is 2 tabs every 6 hours (8 per day), and this person took 14 per day (6 extra!).

Do not take NyQuil while on zoloft! I was on zoloft 3 years ago and I got a cold so I went to get dayquil and NyQuil. I was so stupid not to look at the warning on the NyQuil/dayquil itself that say Do not use:

  • With other medicines containing acetaminophen
  • If you are now taking a prescription monoamine oxidase inhibitor (MAOI) (certain drugs for depression, psychiatric or emotional conditions, or Parkinson's disease), or for 2 weeks after stopping the MAOI drug. If you do not know if your prescription drug contains an MAOI, ask a doctor or pharmacist before taking this product.

I think all anti depressants are MAOI. Anyway I didn't read that until I took a total of 14 gel caps day/nightquil. First thing I noticed was when I tried to go to sleep the sides of my abdomin were twitching and the second was the really horrible weird dreams I was having. I took ibuprofen also and that is in the same bad boat as NyQuil. I'm almost 100% sure that because I combined those 2 that I had a relapse with my drepression a month after I got better and then another 3 months again same thing. Even today 3 years later my liver is messed up and soar if I get stressed and don't get enough sleep or if i have a couple of beers even. It really sucks, I'm actually going to see a doctor today to see if there is anything I can do cuz I bet my liver is scared up from mixing Zoloft and NyQuil.

Not really....risk of death by serotonin toxicity..wikipedia's serotonin syndrome includes the active ingredient dextromethorphan 30mg...I experienced sweating and pounding heartbeats...hyperactive bowel sounds...with my zoloft 50mg...

its also a syndrome which 85% of MD's don't diagnose so the drug interactions WITH SSRIs can be deadly..

Not recommended. Nyquil contains an antihistamine. Zyrtec is also an antihistamine. Taking 2 or more antihistamines may result in excess drowsiness or other undesired side effects.

I would not recommend this as Nyquil depresses the respiratory system and so do sleeping pills. This could compromise your ability to breathe adequately and obtain enough oxygen.
