In the USA, if your Federal Student Loans are in default, then your original lender was paid 97% of your loan value by a Federal Guarantee Agency. Guarantee Agencies are basically insurance companies. When your lender was paid off, the Guarantee Agency took ownership of your loans. Guarantee Agencies have the right by law to keep any Federal Income Tax return money that is owed to you. They also have the right to garnish any wages and to garnish Social Security benefits. It depends on the specific policies of the college and financial aid program you are enrolled in. In general, if you drop out before the official withdrawal deadline, you may still owe tuition fees for the portion of the semester you attended. If you received financial aid, there may be consequences such as having to repay a portion of the aid disbursed for that semester. It is best to consult with your college's financial aid office for accurate information based on your individual situation.

Yes, you may apply for financial aid even if you are are convicted felon. If the financial aid application asks you a question in regards to this issue, just answer honestly. They will ask you if you have been convicted for the sale of drugs, or for possession of drugs while on financial aid. If this is true, you would not be eligible for aid. Please note, it says while you were on financial aid. So, if you were convicted before or after you received aid, or you never applied for financial aid before, then your OK. Go figure!
