Yes and no. Because if you do not have enough soil, the roots won't be able to spread out. So you will need the right amount of soil.

Also, nutrients and water are stored for the plant's use in the soil, and so too little soil can result in inadequate amounts of both for the plant.

yes some plants require acidic soil, and some plant require alkaline soil. other plants can thrive in different soils. for instance, here in Florida to grow roses, we have a more alkaline soil and we have to ammend it with peat moss to make it more acidic.

Yes because the soil would be too sandy or wet. Plants need the right amount of soil depending on the type of plant. Too much soil can also cause the plant to "puke" or in other word "not feel good". This means plants will not get as much sunlight as needed because you have to almost double the amount of water so your left with a lot of water and soil and little sunlight. The plant will almost have to "gobble" up the soil and water and will not focus on the sunlight. This causes the plants sudden death. I have done this experiment before so you better believe my your plants will die and so might you!
