Yes, you can attach PVC pipe to ceramic pipe with a fernco. You just have to make sure the inside diameters of the fernco match up with the pipes you are joining.

the coil resistor is a ceramic block on the top of your coil, you just remove the wires attach to it, put some grease on the bolts(on the new one) that attach the wires, and put it back together, to see if your resistor is faulty, just run a wire from 1 pole to the other, make sure you have a good contact.
