In geographical areas: Influenza viruses are constantly mutating and it is believed this is what finally ends epidemics and pandemics of influenza. Often new cases of infections just seem to disappear after a certain length of time. When viruses mutate they can lose the ability to infect their prior hosts anymore. Once they have no ability to invade their hosts, they can no longer replicate, and they can just eventually die out.
