Orthodontic braces do not 'cause' cavities. More than likely, inadequate oral hygiene caused the cavity.
The problem with braces is that they can make oral hygiene more difficult. Depending on the specific case, the person usually has brackets, bands, and wires all over the teeth, making it difficult to adequately get the teeth clean.
In addition to the usual brushing, it is recommended that a person in braces use additional methods to clean their teeth. Oral irrigation (Water Pik) and interproximal cleaners (Proxabrush) be helpful in keeping the teeth clean.
In addition, daily fluoride rinses (ACT, Fluorigard) can be used to strengthen the tooth enamel and and make it more resistant to dental decay.

∙ 14y agoYes, whether you are getting braces through your regular dentist or through an orthodontist (specialist), they will check for cavities. I had my teeth cleaned and a check-up at my dentist, then went to my orthodontist to get ready for my braces. My orthodontist noticed something that my dentist didn't, and I had to go back to my dentist to get the cavity taken care of before they put the braces on. They don't want any hindrances once the braces are on, so they try to prevent everything they can before they put them on.

Your orthodontist and dentist should discuss this. usually they'll want you to get a crown after you get braces because crowns are man made and made to fit your bite before you have braces. so if you get the crown before the braces, after you straighten your teeth, your bite won't be right. They'll proabably have you do the build up on the tooth that needs the crown to make it stronger which is required before you actually get a crown. Then put braces on. And after you get your braces off then you'll get your crown.
