You can always press a case. Is the person liable? The judge or jury will decide. It may be wise to try arbitration or negotiation first. Consult a legal professional. They are cheap or free, at least upon an initial consultation. Fault (liability) can be subjective, and it will be determined by the court (if it comes to that).

If the attacking dog was unprovoked (your dog didn't bark at/bite other dog), the I would say that you should at least file a police report. Even if there is nothing that can happen this time, if multiple reports are file against a single dog, then that dog may be euthanized for the protection of all other dogs it may come into contact with.

OH yes. The owner of the dog is responsible for keeping it within its boundaries or on a leash at all times. If the owner does not do this they are responsible for what happens.

Can you get sued for taking a dog you mistook for a lost dog?

Not if the dog had no collar or identification on it. If the dog does have a collar or identification you should do everything you can to contact the owner. Even if the dog does not have identification you should either take the dog to a local shelter or advertise widely that you have found a loose dog so the owner can reclaim their dog. The owner should be appreciative of your efforts to keep their dog from coming to harm if you found it wandering alone.

No I don't think so I never really heard of anyone get sued for giving the dog as a gift. But if someone saw a dog on the street and someone bought it took care of its vet bills and soon the real owner wants the dog back then maybe yes.

What do you do if your dog has attacked livestock?

You need to make sure your dog never gets loose again so it does not get into that situation again. You need to talk with the livestock owner and offer to pay for damages if the livestock was killed or if the attack causes veterinary expense to the owner. I do not know where you live but in our state a livestock owner has the right to shoot and kill any dog that is either chasing or attacking their livestock. You as the owner would be responsible for your dog being killed since you allowed it into the situation.
