Sounds like the head gasket may be leaking to allow the coolant to get in the oil but it it still sealing well around the cylinders. Yes, lower intake manifold gasket is probably leaking. Very common in 1997 and 1998 models. Good engine, just needs sealed up.
Most likely, your head gasket no longer seals properly. Coolant and oil normally circulate through separate channels in your engine. A faulty head gasket allows oil to pass into the coolant channels and vice versa. If your gasket is leaking, you will also have loss of compression in one or more cylinders and possibly white clouds of steam in your exhaust, from coolant getting into the cylinders.
You also need compression for the fuel/air mixture to ignite. Check all cylinders for compression. The compression should be higher than125 psi. You may have a bad headgasket.
Yes, you could have a cracked or warped head. You may have done some serious damage. Run a compression test of all cylinders to see exactly how much damage was done to the cylinders. If you hear any noises that are not normal you may have ruined this engine and it may need a major overhaul. Not only were you getting oil in the coolant but you also had coolant in the oil. Coolant is a horrible lubricant and will cause serious damage to cylinder bore, bearings, and everything else that moves. If the compression is low on one or more cylinders, you will have to open it up and see exactly what is going on. The fact that you say it is loosing oil is a very bad sign. If you are not burning the oil or leaking the oil, where is it going? Blue smoke is a sign of oil burning. White smoke is a sign of coolant in the combustion chamber. A compression test will tell you allot.
High compression is usually caused by either excessive carbon build up, excessive fuel being injected or oil or coolant getting into the cylinder.
if your car is getting hot its usually the first clue... if its smoking (coolant out of the exhuast) or is making exsesive pressure in the coolant system its from a bad head gasket letting water in the cylinders and then exiting out the exhuast or vicversa pushing air from the cylinders in the coolant system... either way if its doing that it most deffinatley the head gasket
Are you loosing coolant? Is coolant getting mixed with oil or vice versa? Run engine to normal opeating temperature Remove dipstick and let a drop fall onto a hot engine part Oil will smoke coolant will sizzle Do a compression test 2 adjacient cylinders with low readings indicate a leaking head gasket
Check to see if your 5.7 has 2 coolant sensors---if it does they should be on the front of the engine on the intake manifold and on the cylinder head, usually on the driver side close to the exhaust manifold.
Go to an auto parts store and ask the guy if you can use their compression test kit. Pull the spark plugs one at a time and connect the kit to the slot where the plug came out. Have one person crank the engine while the other looks at the gauge on the tester. Replace that plug and move to the next one. All of the cylinders should test about the same. If not, you are not getting compression in one of your cylinders. If didn't know this much and you are not getting compression then its time to get a mechanic because you're going to have to take your engine apart to fix this.
There is a problem around the head in which coolant is getting into the cylinders. White smoke can almost always be attributed to a coolant in the engine problem.
Coolant getting into a combustion chamber. Probably a bad head gasket or intake manifold gasket.
You have coolant getting mixed in with the oil. The head gasket and intake manifold gasket would be your most likely culprits.
No, but your crankcase should be vented anyway. If your getting coolant in the crankcase it is getting in from a bad head gasket or cracked head or bad intake manifold gaskets. If you don't fix it soon your engine will be toast.
